05+ Breed Notes – BEC 2018

Most of you by now will have heard about The Kennel Club’s new judges’ education programme – the Judges Competency Framework (JCF), which will go live in January 2019. Further to this, the Kennel Club has recently written to all breed clubs asking them to appoint a Breed Education Coordinator (BEC) for their breed by 1st June 2018.

As the role is essentially administrative, the BEC will need to be both literate and computer literate with good coordinating skills. Ideally they will already have good administration experience, including report writing and using computers and spreadsheets. Having good ‘people skills’ would also be a definite advantage!!

More importantly, they do not necessarily have to award CC’s nor do they have to be a (past or present) breed club committee member. In numerically small breeds the BEC could (with the Kennel Club’s permission) also be a Mentor or Observer, but not all three roles.

The BEC will need to co-ordinate all of the educational and judges development opportunities on behalf of both breed clubs. It is an important role and will encompass managing the information for the breed clubs in all breed educational opportunities, ie Breed Appreciation Days, the multiple-choice Breed Standard Exam, mentors, observers, as well as the subsequent assessors and exhibits for the KC organised Breed Competence Assessments.

There will be dedicated Kennel Club staff to assist the BEC in carrying out their role and provide them with advice and support throughout all stages of the JCF education process. Further information on the whole process and a full ‘job description’ can be found on the Kennel Club’s web site http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/JCF

The Kennel Club will be inviting all appointed BECs to an event on Sunday 15th July at the KC Building at Stoneleigh where they will be briefed fully on the role and have the opportunity to ask questions.

If anyone out there has the time and experience and would like to be considered for the role of the Keeshond Breed Education Coordinator, then please contact both club Secretaries – Ian Stubbings and Geraldine Clark.
