Keeshond Critique-Crufts 2012

Firstly, I thank the Crufts committee for the opportunity to judge our lovely breed at Crufts. A big thank you also to the exhibitors who were kind enough to enter. I was very fortunate to have two really excellent stewards in Dave Foulds and Steve Myring.

Sadly, since I last judged I found that the same faults are still prevalent. Colour and markings still need watching. It doesn’t matter whether the overall coat colour is light or dark, the Breed Standard calls for a mixture of grey and black with clearly defined markings. Sadly, today it was apparent that in many cases we seem to have lost this, especially the distinct and very important shoulder and saddle markings so unique to the breed. Movement also still leaves much to be desired.

Dog CC and Best of Breed went to Miles & Cullen’s’ Am, Can, Eng Ch Kemonts Skyline’s Game Boy, an all American bred male, yet so correct to our Kennel Club Breed Standard. I was pleased to see him go second in the Utility Group under Geoff Corish. Thus endorsing the quality of this beautiful Keeshond.

Veteran Dog: 2 (0 abs) 1, Miles’ Allforus Frosting Over Lekkerbek JW ShCM, seven years old, his looks and enthusiasm in the ring belie his age. Lovely outline, compact body, good neck and well set tail, good bone and feet. Appealing head and expression with well defined spectacles, superb colour and markings. Moved well. 2, Hicksons’ Ch Kichigai Great Pretender, still a handsome boy, pleasing outline, good colour and markings. Unsettled on the day and unfortunately a touch overweight, which reflected in his movement.

Special Puppy Dog: 3 (1 abs) 1, Tews’ Bargeway Keen To Rumble, 10 months old. Attractive outline with very good bone and feet. Coat colour still needs to clear a little and for markings to be more defined, but this will come with age. Found his head to be particularly pleasing, good spectacle markings. 2) Bartons’ Collcrist Maximus, another 10 months old boy, good overall shape, good colour and markings, well set tail. Nice head although a little round in eye, moved well.

Special Junior Dog: 2 (0) 1, Pattisons’ Eastkees Don’t Say A Word, typical of the type that this kennel produces. Square outline with a high set tail, good front and rear. Very attractive yet masculine head set upon a good neck and shoulders, good eyes and well placed ears. Would prefer a stronger colour and markings could do with more definition. Moved well. 2) Burwin & Tedrows’ Healdsburg Alexei, good colour and coat texture, a fraction long in back, tail well placed. Spectacle markings lacked definition. Stood a little wide in front.

Post Graduate Dog: 7(0 abs) 1, Wadmore-Swiths’ Hunnivoles Woody Valentine JW, pleasing outline, good neck and shoulders, nice tail set. Well shaped head although ears a little wide set, good spectacles. Good coat colour and markings. Moved well. 2, Lindsays’ Enreveyar Exceptional With Mezanda, nice size and type, head a little plain but good eye shape. Good coat colour and texture. Could be a little shorter in back. Didn’t move quite as well as first. 3, Bakers’ Foxifayre Born Free, nice size, a little long in body and would like much more definition of both coat colour and markings. Head heavier than I would like. Moved ok. 4, Lush’s Buchkees Love In The Mist 5, Kerrs’ Allforus Curly Wurly.

Limit Dog: 11 (2 abs) 1, Feists‘ Neradmik Valentino, stood away in his class. Good wedge shaped head, pleasing eye and ear set. Excellent outline, good spring of rib, front, bone and feet. High set tail, clean neck and shoulders. Lovely coat colour of the correct texture with good definition of all markings. Moved soundly. 2) Atkinsons’ Torrikees who’s The Boss Of Winkle star, good overall shape, well constructed body with good bone and feet. Not the clarity of coat colour and markings as first. I would prefer his head to have a little more length of muzzle. Well placed ears. 3) Brunts’ Sueacres Iced Diamond Of Zandvoort, Nice head, good neck and shoulders, decent bone, touch longer in body. Could have done with more coat to finish off the picture but what was there was a good colour and had good definition. Back movement a little unsteady. Woods Neradmik secret Affair With Weglaufen, 5, Randsleys’ Wund-R YWorkin For A Livin At Szaryk.

Open Dog; 6 (1 abs) Wonderful class to judge, three superb Keeshonds took the first three places. 1, Miles & Cullens’ Am, Can, Eng Ch Kemonts Skyline’s Game Boy, outstanding in any company. Beautifully balanced, good outline, short and compact in body, true front, well sprung ribs, excellent bone and tight feet, excellent reach of neck, high set well curled tail. Dressed in a good coat of correct colour with superb definition of markings and coat texture. Typical wedge shaped head with a good expression, dark well shaped eye and well defined spectacles, set off by neat well placed ears. Moved positively in all directions and presented to perfection. Asked for and deservedly took the Dog CC and Best of Breed. 2, Quicrays’ French Ch Dolce Vita Dyck Of Bloom White, handsome dog. Another who presented the best of outlines, having a compact well sprung body and a very highly set tail. Well shaped head with a good dark eye and clearly visible spectacles, set on a good neck and shoulders. The picture was completed by a close fitting jacket of the strongest colour and harshest of textures, but still with the all important markings and grey-cream undercoat showing. Good mover. His overall quality meant that he could not be denied the Reserve Dog CC. 3, L Menicoris’ Trumpets Runnin’ Down A Dream, this four year old was another who presented a beautiful picture. With a short back, good bone and feet, and a quality coat with excellent colour and markings, he really has all of the essentials. Unfortunately, on the day he did not pull himself together to make the best of them. 4, Carrolls’ Ir Ch Arctic Kees Best Kept Secret. 5, Divers Ch. Ir Ch Allforus roll Of The Dice At Murmansk ShCM.

Good Citizen Dog 1 (0 abs) Helkeesen Regal Surfer Among Serenaubach, very smart dog, short back, good tail set, colour and markings could be a clearer, Nice overall type, moved positively.

Veteran Bitch. 6 (1 abs) Sharp-Bales’ Ch Sturtmoor Crazy for Neradmik, eight year old. Lovely
overall shape, short back, and a well curled tail that is so well set that it nearly touched her ruff. Beautifully constructed with sufficient bone, excellent front and rear. Lovely head and expression, good spectacle markings. Good colour and markings. Full of vitality, she moved and showed to perfection throughout the class. Reserve Bitch CC. 2, Williams’ Allforus Crystal Dream For Yontan, another lovely bitch, pleasing colour and markings. Very nice head, good expression. Moved very well, not quite so square in outline as first. 3, Lindsays’ Mezanders Teachers Pet, one of the oldest here today at nearly ten years old. The quality is still there, nice coat colour and texture, lovely mover. 4, Passmores’ Trumpet Hand Of Fate For Torrikees. 5, Hills’ Valkanties Chloe With Plymkees ShCM.

Special Puppy Bitch. 4 (1 abs) A disappointing class to judge. The first two in class were both a nice shape and quite pretty bitches standing. Unfortunately, both moved poorly. 1, Hicksons’ Moonlight N’Vodka, appealing outline, high set tail, attractive head. Narrow in front causing poor front movement. Her back movement is acceptable. Won the class on her good colour and markings. 2, Leachs’ Sueacres Pure Crystal, lovely head and expression, coat colour not so clear or markings defined. Hocks turned inwards when standing and crossed when moving. Front movement fine. 3, Wilsons’ Gallowtree Me And My Girl, plainer bitch overall. A little longer in back. Nice coat colour although markings could have been more defined.

Special Junior Bitch. 3 (1 abs) 1, Palmers’ Eastkees Foxy Lady At Shelderon, nice outline, good neck and shoulders, adequate bone and good tail set. Well shaped head, good eye for both shape and colour, nice ears. Coat colour and markings could be more defined, the coat texture however was very good, Nice mover. 2, Hopkins Torrikees Shakira Among Serenaubach, slightly smaller bitch than first, very good definition of coat colour and markings, high set tail, nicely balanced head, good ear placement. Unsteady in movement both coming and going.

Post Graduate Bitch. 7 (1 abs) 1, Saunders Liefkees Annabell, lovely overall shape, excellent coat colour. Coat on the blow but the depth of markings was still there. Attractive head, dark eye and good ear placement. Well constructed with a very good front and rear, moved well. 2, McIntosh & Burdons’ Whizkees Onyx Solitaire Of Shelderon, nice bitch but on the day did not move as well as first. Pretty head, good eye shape and ear placement. Lovely colour, well set tail which she always held to her best advantage 3, Gates’ Lacetrom Cruivie, strong colour and markings, nice head and good ear set, eye a little round. 4, Norris Sareveta Day Dream 5, Wadmore-Smiths’ Hunnivoles Pepsi Rock

Limit Bitch 10 (6 abs) 1, Austins’ Chotahkees Truly Gorgeous, lovely bitch, nice size, high set tail, good reach of neck. Good wedge shaped head, neat well placed ears, correct spectacles. Close fitting jacket of a good colour. Moved well in all directions, Showed beautifully, standing four square at all times. In the challenge I felt that her lighter eye marred her expression. With a darker eye and a little more substance she really would be truly gorgeous. 2, Carters’ Amikirs Arabella, lovely outline, good colour and markings. Nice head, good ear set and placement, good dark eye, moved well. 3, Roses’ Neradmik Kisses N giggles For Esorkees A nice bitch with all of the essentials. Attractive head with a good ear set. Strong colour and markings, decent movement. Didn’t make the best of her self in the ring, and had a tendency to slightly drop her tail when standing. 4, Bardsley & Rings’ Baleissa Indian Summer

Open Bitch 10 (3 abs) Bardsleys’ Ch Baleissa Catwalk Queen, upstanding bitch who took the eye with her attractive outline, lovely coat colour and markings. Well proportioned head, sweet expression. Almond shaped eye of the correct colour, good spectacles, well placed ears. Excellent reach of neck leading down into a short compact body with well sprung ribs, a good front and a high set well curled tail. Beautifully constructed with just the correct amount of bone for size. Sound on the move. Bitch CC. 2, Gregorys’ Ch Amikirs Adorabubble JW, beautiful coat colour and texture, well set tail. Short and compact in body. Moved a little wide in front. 3, Francis & Wildings’ Swashway Stage Struck, very pretty bitch of a similar type to second in class, which is no surprise as they both share the same sire As with all the stock from this kennel has a lovely head and expression. Compact in body with a lovely coat for colour and texture. Could have moved a little better at the rear. 4, Carrolls’ Ir Ch Stratus Armani Grange

Good Citizen Bitch 2 (0.abs) 1, Bardsleys’ Ch Baleissa Catwalk Queen 2, Saunders Liefkees Annabell
