North of England Keeshond Club Open Show 18 July 2015
The seminar on Sex Drugs and Fertility held in the morning was such a splendid idea and very well attended, and everyone surely went home a little wiser. I wished I lived nearer as the local vet giving the talk clearly has detailed experience in this area and local dog breeders must find it reassuring to know that AI and semen storage can be arranged so easily.
Thank you for the invitation to judge at this club show, and to the exhibitors for the splendid entry from far and wide and their good sporting acceptance of my sometimes difficult decisions. The committee ensured I was well looked after and my stewards made sure the ring ran to ship (or barge) shape order. The towel gift embroidered with my affix was such a thoughtful memory which I will find both useful and a reminder of my day with you all.
I did not encounter any problem in seeing the desired spectacles. Black tail tips were present on most. Bites were not a problem. A couple would benefit from a little more grooming and some nails were in need of a trim – long nails would be detrimental in keeping foot to floor contact on barge boards. Whereas with some other breeds the legs can converge into a single plane at speed, I was looking for feet falling directly under the body facing forwards and four square, as this would distribute the body weight evenly and help retain composure, as they do not need to move speedily, just with business-like purpose along the barge deck. As with any coated breed, what you see from the ring-side is not necessarily what you find with your hands.
MPD (3,1a) 1. Reed’s Byquy Rich Gent. Ex shape and balance on this young man. Well off for bone. Well defined shoulder markings. High set tail. Dark almond shaped eyes. Ex bite. A most positive mover. BPD 2. Pattison’s Eastkees Winter Storm. Just 6 months. Dark nails and cat feet. Ex stop and small ears. Coat coming along well with ex trousers. Very happy chappie. A little erratic on the move, but has plenty of time ahead to settle. More important to enjoy it at the moment.
PD (2) 1. Reed’s Byquy Will You Be Rich. 7.5 months. Preferred his almond eye shape and oblique set. Well laid shoulders, tight cat feet. Level topline. Slightly sloping pasterns and hocks. Well controlled steady movement. 2. Brunt’s Kimokees Laugh N Run at Zandvoort (Imp Fin). 11 months well grown lad. Extremely well coated. A little rounder in eye and toes in a little in rear movement. Tight feet, velvety ears. Ex plume proudly carried.
JD (4,1a) 1. Hickson’s Kichigai Luke Skywalker. Black on backs of correct sized ears. Ex bite. Square and compact shape. Thick neck ruff. Dark lips, eye rims and sporting the spectacles. Tail set high. Well coated. 2. Kimokees Laugh N Run at Zandvoort (Imp Fin) 3. Grahamslaw’s Shelderon Spirit Walker. Good stop and head proportions. Carrying right amount of coat. Liked his eye shape. Shame he has a tendency to crab on the move.
YD (1) 1. Shelderon Spirit Walker.
PGD (1) 1. Wilkin’s Whizzkees Onyx Sampson. Impressed by his tight elbows and ex layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Ivy shaped ears. Well boned and of good size. Straight hocks viewed from the rear. Profuse stand off coat. Good square outline from all views. A little cow hocked on the move but moves very briskly.
LD (5) 1. Subbings’ Vandersee Irish Guard. Really liked this boy’s size, amount of coat, and movement. Good tight elbows and well laid shoulders. Liked his tail set and carriage and overall balance. Good stop and head proportions. Sprightly movement, true to breed type. 2. Barton’s Collchist Maximus. Larger built than 1 but of good body proportions. Difficult to assess structure under such a thick coat. Moves a little close behind. Dark eyes and dark muzzle with good expression. Velvety erect ears.3. Miles/Cullen/Brown’s Rossvale’s Legacy for Lekkerbek. Dark eyes and liked his head proportions. Straight forelegs. Good texture coat and undercoat. Tight feet. Very alert and bright. level topline. Movement not as good as the winner.
OD (5, 1a) 1. Brunt’s Sueacres Iced Diamond of Zandvoort. This was the best mover in the class. Well boned but not oversized. Dark ivy ears, darkest of almond shaped eyes with dark rims. Ex front assembly and well muscled. Would just prefer darker nails. Liked his square outline and sure footedness. 2. Miles/Cullen/Cullen’s Neradmik Game Plan for Lekkerbek. Longer coat length. Dark nails and cat feet. Ex muzzle and dark lips. Tail set on high. Light circles round eyes. Not as positive on the move as the winner.3. Wilkins’ Pommary Ruff N’ Ready at Valindale. Good eye shape. Lighter in coat colour. Moved a little close behind.
VD (3) 1. Austin’s CH Valindale Whatever. Oozes breed type on the stand and moves with a brisk business-like stride. Although he slipped on the polished wood floor he quickly regained his balance proving he would cope with a slippery deck. Ex spring of rib and in good hard muscular condition. Moved straight and true. Nothing exaggerated about this boy. BD & BIS & BVIS. 2. Brunt’s CH Zandvoort Dream Machine. Moved so straight and true with no hint of closeness behind. Ex size and square shape. Very young at heart. Ex front assembly and coat texture. 3. Gate’s Valindale What Do You Think About Lacetrom. Not the overall keenness or movement of the first two but a good square shape and balance and good for size. Strong pasterns. Not using his ears today.
SVD (0)
Breeders D (1) 1. Hill’s Plymkees Cool Dude ShCM. Fabulous lad with ex spring of rib. Correct shoulder and upper arm placement, with corresponding rear angulation. Straight forelegs when viewed from front and moves briskly with animation, totally alert to everything around him. Ears set at 5 to 1. Correct coat texture. Holds his topline on the move where his stride is free and easy. RBD & RBIS.
Special Not Bred by Exhibitor (6,2a) 1. Neradmik Game Plan for Lekkerbek. 2. Rose’s Rossvale Master of Destiny for Esorkees. Lovely shape and size. Ex squareness and compact in shape. Blackest of muzzles. Lost out on his front movement where he toes in due to his loose elbow placement. 3. Shelderon Spirit Walker

MPB (4) Such a good class of promising puppies. 1. Reed’s Byquy Bam Bam. Playful, enjoying herself, and full of charisma. Liked her stand off coat and lovely tight elbows. Ex outline. 2. Austin & Johnson’s Chotahkees Shades of Grey. Very similar to 1 and splitting hairs between them. Lovely shape. Ex ribs and level topline. 3. Lush’s Gallowtree Tassel at Ednaaron. Promising puppy but moving close behind today. Nails need trimming. Left the ring before critique written, hence no further notes.
PB (3,1a) 1. Austin & Johnson’s Chotahkees Don’t Stop Me Now. Really fell for this young lady who was so sweet and feminine. She moved so straight and true with an elastic lightness of footfall. Alert and attentive all the time. Loved her square shape from all sides, dark almond eyes, stop, & expression. Such was her overall quality and the impression that she made on me that I succumbed to her spell and awarded her BPB, BPIS & RBB. 2. Fitches’ Samoykees Exclusive Moon. Ex bone whilst remaining feminine. Not quite as square as 1st. Dark eyes and lips and behind ears. Acceptable pencilling on toes. Stand off coat.
JB (4,1a) 1. Hill’s Whizzkees Ebony Silver for Plymkees. Naughty but nice! Ex eyes and spectacles, she excelled in well balanced angulation fore and aft, set off by a full plume. Giving her handler a hard time and testing her patience, but could not be denied this place on her conformation and when she does settle her movement affirms her conformation. Once she settles to the job in hand she’ll be hard to beat. 2. Grahamslaw’s Shelderon Secret Serenade. Tight tail curl, a little longer in body than 1. Good angulation at the rear but toes in at the front when moving. Attractive headpiece. 3. Wilkin’s Whizzkees Ebony Slipper. Out of coat but this allows sight of her nice body shape. Feminine. A low set tail detracted from an otherwise nice outline.
YB (3,1a) 1. Whizzkees Ebony Silver for Plymkees 2. Shelderon Secret Serenade
PGB (6,3a) 1. Palmer’s Shelderon Summer Sparkle. Ears set perhaps a little close together, dark obliquely set eyes, dark muzzle, square outline. Lovely elbows held tight against body, well laid shoulders and short strong loin. Well set tail. Very steady in movement and the best movement in this class. 2. Pattison’s Eastkees Silver Sixpence. Would like more width to her in front and better held elbows as she plaits on the move. Shoulders are nicely angulated. Ex neck ruff, and stands on neat feet. 3. Richardson’s Ricara Rose at Odinkees. Pretty girl, paler in muzzle, good overall balance, good width to body, but would prefer eyes more almond shaped. Toes in on the move.
LB (4,2a) 1. Pattison’s Eastkees Sunday Girl. Ex stop and headpiece, level topline, tail set high and held well. Moderate angulation at rear. Almond shaped eyes. Squarely built. 2. Fitches’ Venway Believe in Magic at Samoykees. Not as square as 1 and stop could be more defined. Erect ears. Centrally held tail. Going through a coat change. Moved well.
OB (7,5a) 1. Hickson’s Kichigai Ups A Daisy ShCM. Lovely square compact body, tight elbows and ex well sprung ribs with short strong loin. Well shaped wedge head. I’d like the handler to train her to look full ahead when moving, as she tends to look up and around to her handler (as if doing obedience) which makes her body crab – but when she does move with head in the correct position her movement is spot on at a smart trot. BB & BOS. 2. Austin & Johnson’s Chotahkees Enchantress. Darker shading on rear feet. Stands and moves a little wide in front, and is a little close behind. Good shoulder markings. Dark eyes and muzzle. Strong hocks.
VB (5, 1a) 1. Hill’s Plymkees Limited Edition ShCM. Fabulous shape to this girl with everything to like. Attentive to her handler (in stark comparison to her earlier kennel mate) carrying the right amount of weight, tight elbows, well ribbed up, tight tail. Ex shape and carries herself well on the move. Was most definitely a top contender in the challenge. 2. Lush’s Zandvoort Heaven’s Dream for Ednaaron. Eyes not as dark as 1, but dark enough. Flat skull. Really nice shape and body structure, with good movement, very on the ball. Would prefer slightly less length to the coat. 3. Gate’s Kwajongen What Katie Did at Valindale. 12 years young and still has an ex scissor bite. Liked her size and balance and this is another who at twelve can outmove some youngsters..
SVB (4,1a) I could have agonised for ages over placing these three 12 year olds. Indeed, I changed placings in my head many times. Each had so many merits and all were such a credit to their owners. All were well shaped and nice sizes. Excellent examples of the breed and it’s ability to live a long and full life without showing its age. 1. Burgess’ Venway Zoe with Reesburg. Carrying slightly more weight than the others, but just inched past her sister for this place. 2. Crawford’s Venway Zara. Less weight than 1, moved well, nice eyes and neat cat feet. 3. Stubbings’ Norkees Special Edition at Vandersee. Beautiful girl who was so well muscled and fit for purpose.
Breeders B (4,1a) 1. Austin’s CH Chatahkees Truly Gorgeous. Dark muzzle but a little lighter in eye colour. Ex coat texture and stand off, ex ruff, correct width all through the body, with well developed chest of ex depth. High set tail. 2. Shelderon Summer Sparkle. 3. Samoykees Exclusive Moon.
Special Not Bred by Exhibitor B (4,1a) 1. Whizzkees Ebony Silver for Plymkees. 2. Shelderon Secret Serenade 3. Zandvoort Heaven’s Dream for Ednaaron
