19 Breed Notes – May 2022

Apart from Birmingham National, last weekend also saw a second round of the Scottish Keesie walks; first up on
Saturday 7th was the North of Scotland Keesie walk. They decided on Roseisle which is a lovely beach and part forest within dunes, situated near Burghead on the beautiful Moray coast and a very popular place for picnics and days out.
They met at 2pm in the car park and headed down to the beach on a lovely sunny day with a little wind. There was Anna, son Yan, daughter Martina with Joy; Sarah Murray with Joey & Zach, Colin and Lauren with Freddie, Christine with Meike and Darius and Magda with Tilly.
It was more of a meander along the beach with all the dogs enjoying a splash and paddle and a few folk stopping to ask about the breed. We headed back to the car park by about 3.30pm where we really enjoyed a BBQ. We had all arranged to bring different things to eat and Christine’s ginger & lemon cake was delicious, as were the Polish sausages Anna had brought along. Roseisle has BBQ’s all set up, so you need only bring coals and food and as it’s in the shady car park area it’s ideal for dogs not getting too hot. It was lovely to see everyone and meet Darius, Magda & Tilly. We all dispersed soon after 5 pm and look forward to the next meet later in the year.

On the following day, Sunday it was the turn of the Central Scotland Keesie walk being held at Drumpellier Country Park. Numbers were more than doubled compared to the first walk with 9 keesies attending! From the last walk we had Talyn, Jura & Skye, with Liath, Joey, Tara, Ruby, Mika and puppy Koda all coming for their first keesie walk.
Everyone met in the main car park for 11am where we had a good chat before letting the dogs have some off lead time. That was then followed by a walk around the loch and a sit down for some food outside the cafe. The weather on the day was perfect with the sun making an appearance; a good time was had by all!

This weekend Kitty Joshi organised an impromptu Keesie walk in the Rosery Gardens in London’s Battersea Park.
Seven humans – Chase, Mira, George, Justin, Carol, Kitty & Mary, along with 4 Keesies – Henry, Peggy, Moona & Ghost met up at 10:30am and spent the next three hours walking, socialising and generally having a good time.

It’s good to see that the walks are proving popular with more people turning up for each one; at this rate we’ll be getting more Keesies on walks than at the shows!! The next one is the Yorkshire Keesie walk on Sunday 29th May, all details can be found on FB & Club’s website.

Below is a link to a survey to assess the impact of the 2018 licensing regulations. Please take time to have a look and do the survey as this regulation has an impact on all of us, even those who breed just one litter a year. Don’t be put off when it says to allow 45 minutes to complete the survey, as it took me less than 5 minutes to do!!

The 2018 Animal Welfare Licensing Regulations have had a significant effect on dog breeders and we know from anecdotal evidence how much muddle, stress, cost and extra administration they have caused some dog and cat breeders.
The Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) are required to carry out an impact Assessment of these Regulations within five years of them being enacted. This assessment is due to be made this year and next and it is the best opportunity we have to make sensible changes to them.

Defra are calling for facts and information and a carefully created survey is the best way of collecting this data. The result will be considered by the Canine and Feline Sector Group (the most influential non-veterinary lobby group for canine and feline welfare in the UK) and be submitted direct to Defra. I would ask all breeders, whether or not that have been affected by the Regulations, to complete the survey.
