My thanks to the Committee of NEKC for the invitation to stand in as emergency judge and the hard work they put in to make it an enjoyable day for all. Thanks also to the exhibitors for allowing me the pleasure in judging their dogs, especially when they had entered under Mr Diment. With a strong dog and bitch line up, the breed is in good overall shape, please take my comments below in the spirit intended.
Keeshonden are a special, if somewhat wilful breed, it is far too easy to give in to their appealing eyes for that extra treat. This is causing a problem, many exhibits are carrying too much weight, this is spoiling movement, outline and in some cases pushing elbows out and dropping on pasterns. Quite a few would benefit from additional ring craft training this may assist in getting dogs to walk in a straight line, my other gripe is lack of condition.
Invariably dogs from the top winning kennels are well exercised, presented & shown; having owned the breed for 40years I know dogs play up some days, so while they may not always perform in the ring they should always be in top condition. With today’s exhibits I did not see excessive coat but we still have a large range in size. I hope breeders continue to reflect on issues and plan litters with even more care.
MPD 2. 1st BP Hickson’s, Kichigai Luke Skywalker. Unsteady on the move today, good colour and markings at 7.5 month, correct size & proportions, dark correct shaped eye, tail well set on and good plume carried tight to body. 2nd Reed’s, Byquy Night At The Opera. Reluctant to use ears, but more settled on the move than 1, possibly a little fazed by the day at only 6.5 months, nice wedge and markings. Needs a little time to mature.
PD 1 1st Hickson’s, Kichigai Luke Skywalker.
JD 0
YD 2. 1st Miles & Dean’s, Neradmik Family Affair with Lekkerbek. Moved well, very alert, good colour, dark eye, pleasing masculine expression, good spring of rib. 2nd McCormack’s, Gallowtree Ghillie. Nice shaped dog, of good colour, sadly out of coat at the moment, in proportion but unsettled on the move. Needs to body up a little.
ND 1. 1st Barkley’s, Amikirs No Regrets. At only his second show this year he was determined to do his own thing, enjoy his day out and hang the judge. Difficult to examine, dark eye good stop, unsettled on the move today.
PGD 3 (1) 1st RDCC Harris’s, Neradmik All About The Boy for Watchkees ShCm. Judged this boy as a puppy, he has matured well, good colour and definition good head and stop, well constructed front and rear, moved with drive. 2nd Barkley’s, Amikirs No Regrets.
LD 7 (1) 1st Tew’s, Bargeway Keen to Rumble. Good size, colour and definition, very masculine but kept in proportion, moved well. 2nd Miles & Cullen’s, Rossvale’s Legacy for Lekkerbek. Lighter coloured than 1 but retains definition, Good head, unmistakeably male with that twinkle in the eye, ready for anything, sound on the move. 3rd Palmer’s Rossvale Captain Butler at Shelderon. Good colour, well-constructed throughout, had ears erect but not to full attention. Typical male.
OD 4 (1) 1st Peck, Matthews & Stewart’s Ch Klompen’s Who’s Your Daddy (Imp Can) A worthy champion, well presented in good coat, not overdone, super plume on well set tail, correct outline and proportions, short coupled. Brisk movement showing off good physical condition. 2nd Brunt’s, Sueacres Iced Diamond of Zandvoort.
Another well-presented and handled, correct size with good colour & dark eye giving a pleasing expression, good spring of rib, did not have the drive of 1. 3rd Watson’s, Pommary Magic Tricks at Colpatron. Larger dog with good bone and colour, good bite although muzzle a little strong. Would not stand straight for his handler today.
VD 3 (1) 1st Bennett & Savage’s, Ch Thorsdale Trade Mark. Solid dog whose performance belies his 9 years, still has good colour & contrast, correct bite, compact and masculine. 2nd Craig’s Flatmeer Flonkerlicht. Very sprightly, darker than 1 and less definition, correct size with harsh coat, well-constructed, moved better than some younger dogs.
Special Vintage Dog 2 (1) 1st Brunt’s Am Ch Laser’s Tuxedo Junction of Zandvoort (Imp USA). Super condition for a dog of 12.5 yr., moved with real drive, losing some definition, compact and strong only the light muzzle giving away his age.
Breeders Dog 1 (1)
Special Not Bred By Exhibitor Dog 2 (1) 1st DCC, BIS, Peck, Matthews & Ransley’s Wund-R Y Workin for a Livin at Szark (Imp USA). While alone in his class, a striking male, shouted quality from tip of black nose to well set on tail with plume almost into ruff, compact, strong well proportioned, brisk with drive, complete attention on his handler, will soon be a Ch. I imagine he will be good for the breed, obvious winner in dog challenge.
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Class Dog 2. 1st Lush’s Buchkees Love in the Mist. Sound dog of good size & colour, nice wedge and stop, steady on the move. 2nd McCormack’s, Gallowtree Ghillie
MPB 1. 1st Reed’s Byquy We Will Rock You. At 7m a raw baby but already well trained and steady on the move guard coat coming through of good colour, well set tail but a little loose today.
PB 3 (2). 1st Pattison’s Eastkees Silver Sixpence. Very unsettled, would not move straight as kept pulling towards the door, good size and shape, feminine and in proportion.
JB 5 (2) 1st Brown’s Rossvale Hidden Destiny. What a showgirl, she has it all. Another who will soon be a Ch. Well presented & handled seems to show herself. Compact with good reach of neck that flows into a sound well-constructed frame, super outline that she holds on the move, extremely alert, her expression seems to talk to you. 2nd Hattersley’s Torrikees Sea Breeze. Another quality young lady, pleasing outline and expression, well set on tail with good plume tight to body, tight cat like feet. 3rd Palmer’s Shelderon Summer Sparkle. Good colour, nice size and soundly constructed, her problem was too much attention on the handler, by trying to keep in front was not walking straight. Tight pastern’s good feet.

NB 2. 1st Hattersley’s Torrikees Sea Breeze. 2nd Palmer’s Shelderon Summer Sparkle. As Junior.
PGB 6 (3) 1st Parker’s Eastkees Gossip Girl. Growing new coat of good colour definition and texture, dark eye with super specs and feminine throughout. Correct size sound movement. 2nd Marfleet’s Flatmeer Fleurette. Alert, good colour, harsh coat, well-constructed, pushed 1 hard. 3rd Burdon’s Byquy Because You Know. Outline not as tidy, possibly getting ready for new coat, slightly larger but in correct proportion, well set on tight tail.
LB 5 (1) 1st Tew’s Bargeway Neat and Tidy. Her name says it all, she was well presented a quality girl who should go far, feminine with good coat, colour & definition, correct head, pushed hard in the challenge. 2nd Brunt’s Vanstrand Quantum of Solace. On first look round the class thought she would win it, well presented, has good colour & definition, good topline giving super overall appearance, larger than 1 and would prefer darker eye. 3rd Esland’s Chotahkees Tickety Boo at Valindale. Good size, alert with correct head and good ear placement. Moved well.
OB 4 (1) 1st Gregory’s Ch Amikirs Bubbleliciious J.W. Another quality young lady, correct outline super tail and set, nicely balanced, good movement. 2nd McIntosh & Burdon’s Whizzkees Onyx Solitaire of Shelderon. Well coated, dark eye nice marking giving pleasing expression. Good construction moved well going away, a little erratic coming towards today. 3rd Watson’s Pommary Elite n’Klassic at Colpatron. Larger than first 2 but in proportion, good colour and sound, did not sparkle today.
VB 4 (2) 1st Pattison’s Ch Eastkees Idle Chatter. Good outline and colour, her condition belies her age even her muzzle is still dark, profuse well set tail, tight feet, good pastern, good condition, moved well. 2nd Lush’s Zandvoort Heavens Dream for Ednaaron. Super condition for 8yr good colour and coat plush tail well carried, sound construction and movement, a quieter demeanour giving her a stately air.
Special Vintage Bitch 1 1st Brown’s Ch Rosssvale Strike a Pose. The Golden Oldie of the show, a showgirl who has done it all before, a favourite of mine for many years, very spritely and attentive (for the liver) at almost 15 this Lady seems to go on and on, it would be churlish to be critical of where age is starting to show, a credit to her owner.
Breeders Bitch 5 (1) 1st Sharp-Bale’s RBCC Ch Neradmik Miss Holly Berry. A consummate Ch, paw perfect, expertly prepared presented and handled, cannot fault her. In the challenge preferred the animation of winner. 2nd Gregory’s Amikirs Bubbleliciious J.W. 3rd Hickson’s Kichigai Ups a Daisy Sh Cm. Cute, also of good colour, correct head with good ear placement, a little longer cast than first 2.
Special Not Bred By Exhibitor Bitch 3 (1) 1st Hattersley’s Torrikees Sea Breeze. 2nd Parker’s Eastkees Gossip Girl
Good Citizen Dog Scheme Class Bitch 1 1st Lush’s Zandvoort Heavens Dream for Ednaaron
From a super bitch line up came my hardest decision of the day, with so much quality I was spoiled for choice, I mentally shortlisted 3, moved them again and weighed up their various strengths, still very balanced between the 3, however the animation from Rossvale’s Hidden Destiny melted my heart.
