It is over 20 years since I last judged Keeshonds in the UK due to my job at the Kennel Club. On that occasion I was concerned by the number of poor mouths, loose tails, overblown coats, lack of proper marking and poor movement. I am certain that none of you will be surprised to hear that I saw a very different group of Keeshonds this time around with movement being generally good, few overblown coats – most of these being amongst the veterans in which it can be expected, no poor mouths, no loose tails and for the most part clear markings and good coat colour. I do have a couple of ‘moans’ which are that there were a number of very broad backs which would look great on an Australian Shepherd but not on a Keeshond, and a number of dogs which crabbed. The crabbing may have been the result of the way the dogs were handled but if so please be aware that allowing your dog to crab lets it down badly. That said, in my view the breed seems in pretty good shape.
Minor Puppy Dog 1st Pattison’s Bergareds Silver Start at Eastkees Confident pup in excellent coat, well marked with clear spectacles, double curled tail, good ear set and expression. Excellent outline but his movement was a little ‘off’ though I daresay that will improve as he grows.
Puppy Dog 1st Murray’s Flatmeer Flauschig Somewhat shy but a good looking boy with a well marked head, correct ear set and dark eyes. Super square outline, harsh coat and really came into his own on the move when he became much more confident. Best Puppy Dog
Junior Dog 1st Bennett’s Zandvoort Mr Sunshine Well coated youngster with excellent colouring and marking. Good head, beautiful expression, ears and eyes both excellent. Another good mover with a correct outline and level topline.
Post Graduate Dog 1st Rose’s Amikirs Uncle Fester with Esorkees This dog has a super head and expression, good ear set and eyes. Super square outline, well carried tail and moved well with correct gait. His coat seems a little excessive for a dog which is only just over a year old.
Limit Dog 1st Saunders’ Liefkees Amore Excellent, well balanced dog with square outline, a true stand off coat, perfect markings and a super tail set. He has a typical head and foxy expression – well set ears and eyes and his movement is exactly as it should be – brisk and clean. CC & Best In Show. 2nd Pattison’s Eastkees Wild Sage Handsome dog in good harsh coat, correctly marked head, excellent outline including his well set tail. Good well balanced mover. 3rd Murray’s Flatmeer Fliegend Dark boy with smashing head and expression. Harsh heavy coat, square outline. Moved with purpose though a little close behind.
Open Dog 1st Miles, Dean, Cullen & Cullen’s Ch Skyline’s Outlander at Lekkerbek Good looking dog in super coat with tightly curled tail. Well marked, square outline, lovely typical head and expression, dark eyes and excellent on the move. Res CC 2nd Brunt’s Ch Divnyi Drug Dar Heavily coated dog with good outline and correct markings. Brisk movement. Nice head and typical expression with well set ears and eyes. 3rd Fitches’ NL Ch Samoykees Harbour Lights Handsome chap in excellent coat, lovely dark head with clear spectacles, neat feet, correct outline and moved well.
Veteran Dog 1st Murray’s Flatmeer Flightberry Nice looking dog with typical foxy head and expression, well marked and good colouring. Excellent mover – one of the best of the day. 2nd Rose’s Ch Rossvale Endeavour to Esorkees Well marked boy in good coat though lacking trousers on the day. Moved well, excellent tail set, nice head and expression.
Special Veteran Dog 1st Hickson’s Ch Kichigai Only the Lonely 10 ½ year old in excellent coat and condition, well marked with typical head, correctly set ears and eyes. Good on the move and standing – square, correct outline. Best Veteran Dog 2nd Miles, Cullen & Brown’s Ch Rossvale’s Legacy for Lekkerbek 12 ½ year old sweet oldie carrying a very heavy coat as a result of castration but nothing daunted – he was having a good day out! Lovely head and foxy expression, moved well.
Minor Puppy Bitch 1st Kerr’s Bargeway Dancing Queen Charming pup with a big coat, lovely square outline, excellent tail carriage and good mover. Pretty head with well marked spectacles, correct eyes and ears.
Puppy Bitch 1st Ring’s Neradmik Tinseltown at Baleissa Very pretty girl – lovely head and expression, correct eye and ear, well marked. In super coat and mature for her age, perfect outline and excellent brisk movement. Res CC, Best Puppy Bitch & Best Puppy 2nd Passmore’s Torrikees You Wear It Well Another pretty pup with lovely head and expression, harsh coat, well marked and coloured. Good on the move and well balanced outline. 3rd Craig’s Flatmeer Fleur’s Delay Lovely foxy head, well marked spectacles, well carried tail and a super correctly marked coat.
Junior Bitch 1st Bell’s Allforus Miracle of Love Very nice head with foxy expression, well marked, feminine, correct eye and ear. Brisk, straight movement, in good coat and with properly curled tail. 2nd Fitches’ Samoykees Ippolitas Kisses Well coated girl with nice markings and a pretty head. Neat cat like feet and moved well.
Yearling Bitch 1st Bell’s Allforus Miracle of Love
Post Graduate Bitch 1st Pattison’s Eastkees Amber Moon Pretty girl with nice foxy head, good coat and colour, well marked, correctly set double curled tail. Brisk, correct movement. 2nd Curry’s Amikirs Pritti Very nice looking girl with foxy head and good spectacles. In excellent coat and condition, well marked, good balanced outline. Her movement was hard to judge on the day.
Limit Bitch 1st Brunt’s Goldgin Chanel Very typical pretty bitch with foxy head and well set eyes and ears. In super stand off, well marked coat, excellent tail carriage, balanced outline, and great on the move. CC & Reserve Best in Show/Best Opposite Sex 2nd Pattison’s Eastkees Lily of the Valley Nice bitch in excellent condition, well marked coat, good head and expression, lovely outline, well set tail and. Correct brisk movement. 3rd Tew’s Bargeway Breeze On By Loved this girl’s head – typical and foxy with excellent markings, in good coat, nice neat feet, well placed tail, correct outline and good on the move.
Open Bitch 1st Tew’s Ch Bargeway Crystal Clear Lovely girl with super foxy head, well marked coat, excellent tail set, straight, brisk movement and well balanced outline. 2nd Brunt’s Ch Zandvoort Grace’s Secret Pretty bitch in good coat, with excellent markings. Nice head with good ears and eyes giving a typical expression. Excellent on the move. 3rd Fitches’ Ch Sofia Loren Della Ginevrina Good head and expression, well marked spectacles, catlike feet, good on the move. Well carried tail, coat on the heavy side.

Special Veteran Bitch 1st Marfleet’s Flatmeer Fleurette What a sweetheart! 13 ½ and still full of enthusiasm. Lovely foxy head, excellent mover, in good coat and correct outline. 2nd Brunt’s Ch Vanstrand Quantum of Solace Another cheerful oldie enjoying her day out! Heavy coat as so often at this age (13) but well marked and good colour. Correct outline and moved well.
Special Bred by Exhibitor Bitch 1st Marfleet’s Flatmeer Fleur Dilly Nice dark bitch with typical head and expression. In good well marked coat with well balanced outline. Another excellent mover from this kennel. 2nd Brunt’s Zandvoort Moonlight Pretty well marked bitch in excellent coat and condition, typy head with good spectacles, neat cat like feet, well set tail, balanced outline.
Good Citizens Bitch 1st Marfleet’s Flatmeer Fleurting Yet another excellent mover – one of the best of the day. Lovely head and expression, in good coat and well marked.
